CloseThe 2021 BMW R 18 First Edition carries presence with it as it rolls down the street. The simple round headlamp features an LED light bar and LED illumination for a touch of modern. The frame is a traditional tube frame that houses the gorgeously designed engine. All the mechanicals are artfully designed from the 1800cc plaque on the engine’s sides, the machined elements of the engine housing that proudly display the BMW roundel, to the chromed handlebars, valve covers, and exhaust pipes. The exhaust pipes themselves are beautifully sculpted for a unique look and sound. The First Edition starts with the same Black Storm Metallic paint and dresses it up with white pinstriping on the fuel tank and rear fender, plus extra chrome pieces. One place you might not expect to find elegance is the shaft drive system, which delivers smooth and immediate throttle response and looks wonderful, thanks to its open design and nickel-plated finish. The simple speedometer includes on an on-board computer to show additional information when riding. Any sized rider should be able to throw a leg over the R 18, thanks to its low 27.2-inch seat height.
The engine not only looks great, with the cylinder heads sticking out to the sides, but it also delivers the goods. Displacing a healthy 1,802 cubic centimeters, the engine produces 91 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and 116 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 RPM. Wire spoke wheels fit the aesthetic nicely and are sized at 19-inches at the front and 16-inches at the rear. Stopping is handled by twin 300 mm discs with four-piston calipers at the front and a single 300 mm disc with a four-piston caliper at the rear. Automatic stability control, antilock brakes, and three riding modes deliver reassurance, even when the riding conditions worsen.
